“You’ve got to be (an) optimist to be a Democrat, and you’ve got to be a humorist to stay one” WILL ROGERS

“If Democrats Had Any Brains, They’d Be Republicans” – ANN COULTER

“Empathy” is the latest code word for liberal activism, for treating the Constitution as malleable clay to be kneaded and molded in whatever form justices want. It represents an expansive view of the judiciary in which courts create policy that couldn’t pass the legislative branch or, if it did, would generate voter backlash.” – KARL ROVE

“Liberal Democrats are inexorably opposed to tax cuts, because tax cuts give people more power, and take away from the role of government.” – RUSH LIMBAUGH

This is the second in an on-going series of summary/reviews of various politicians, groups and ideas. Tomorrow’s post will be on the Green Pary, followed by two or three other political parties. Requests welcome. The Democratic Party is a Liberal/Progressive party often said to be “to the Left” of America’s political “center”. They generally believe in government intervention, keynesian economics, federal jurisdiction, gun control, living-constitution judiciary, strong foreign diplomacy, minority equal rights, helping the poor and less-well-off, the enviroment as well as a social focus on civil rights and privacy.

My problem with them is that their first reaction to every problem is to have the government fix it. Now, in fairness, if you want to elect someone to office, having them think they can do good in that office is nice. My problem is that the power of elected office in America is a powerful one, they control a huge amount of money and power. As Thomas Jefferson said, “A government big enough to give you everything you want, is big enough to take away everything you have.” Moreover, government often *IS* the problem. They want too much of everyone’s money. They punish successful people to reward lazy, irresponcible, and yes, in some cases unlucky people.

I am firmly against most of their bigger government ideas and a lot of Barack’s Robin Hood tax ideas scare me. His ideas of windfall taxing oil companies and taxing the wealthy more all sound nice and fair, but the truth is it hurts our economy and money leaves our country to be invested in other places. I think the Democrats need to worry a little bit less about the poor, and a lot more about the entire economy. As long as the economy is producing plenty of jobs, the poor won’t need much help.
